Emotive language means Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, veers towards the theatricality of a spoiled child. This is not to say that the memoir is without value, but it is difficult not to agree with Gay’s own description of herself as ‘self-obsessed’ – an adjective particularly reflected in a writing tone which can descend to the whelpings of an over-indulged, economically privileged child. These linguistic dramatics play on readership emotions, making it difficult to view this memoir as anything more than an interesting personal reflection. An unfortunate tendency to allow her language to veer dangerously towards theatricality (words such as ‘invasive,’ ‘cruelties,’ and ‘deprivation’), undermine Gay’s conclusions, allowing it to read more like fictive prose than hard facts. One can only applaud Gay for adding to on going exposure of culture’s complicity in matters of female body image. Sadly, her book is not revelatory, nor does it add anything new to a discussion which has been rolling on for decades.

Gay’s personal experience has led her to conclude that writing can aid in trauma recovery. However, it would be a mistake to assume that Gay’s voice is the same witty voice in her 2014 compilation of essays, Bad Feminist, or the 2015 Ted Talk, Confessions of a Bad Feminist.* Given her harrowing experiences, Gay’s voice is at times contradictory, at times confused, its brokenness reflecting the difficulty in writing this intimate memoir. The book’s multitudinous short chapters lead Gay to conclude that the female body can serve as a feminist fortress, food can become a source of psychological comfort, and the arts (specifically writing), can viably aid recovery from sexual trauma. The traumatic rupturing of her childhood innocence is the foundation stone for Gay’s tragic memoir. Casting a reflective eye over, not only over her relationship to her own body, but socio-cultural attitudes to female physiognomy, Gay’s memoir moves towards feminist conclusions via the traumatic rupturing of a bucolic middle class childhood. Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body was published in 2007 by feminist writer Roxane Gay. 'I ate and ate and ate in the hopes that if I made myself big, my body would be safe. Here I am, finally freeing myself to be vulnerable and terribly human – Roxane Gay in Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body. I buried the girl I was because she ran into all kinds of trouble.
